In 6th grade math, we will work with a lot of useful math skills (e.g. data analysis, calculating with fractions, decimals, and percents, using variables, 2D and 3D geometry, and probability). We will be using the Everyday Mathematics program. It will be a very challenging year, and I also hope it will be a very fun year! :-)

Some parents used to receive a printout of a family letter which describes what each upcoming unit is about. In an effort to be more "Green," family letters will not be printed but can be read on-line at this site.

We are currently working on...finishing up Rates, Ratios, and Proportions, then computations with negative numbers, and ending the year with some more algebra concepts.

Generic websites

Harcourt Math Glossary lets you look up math words.

Multiplication Table will give you multiplication problems with a certain number (that you can modify), and you find the product (Mrs. Rowe can complete each single-digit times table in 20 seconds or less).

Multiplication Flashcards lets you see how many math facts you can answer correctly in 30 seconds (Mrs. Rowe's best score so far is 28).

Mysterious number has you guess a number and will let you know what two numbers it’s between.

The list of numbers has you click on numbers in order from least to greatest and it puts the new one on the end.

Problem Solving Strategies lists the strategies students might mention in POW write-ups.

Logic Puzzle Tutorials allows you to view tutorials for Sudokus, Fill-a-Pix, etc.

Divisibility Rules lets you practice the divisibility rules (more than just the rules from class).

Ask Dr. Math answers questions about prime numbers and describes the Sieve of Eratosthenes.

Intermediate Test Prep Math 8 (Grade 5) Prime and Composite lets you practice checking if some smallish numbers are prime or composite.

Prime Numbers on Khan Academy explains what prime numbers are (although I think his checks for what a number is divisible by looks like an incorrect factor tree to find prime factors (remember 1 is not prime)). You can click on one of the stars on the left side to practice checking for which number is prime or which number is composite.

Virtual Manipulatives: Factor Tree - practice creating factor trees for prime factorization, GCF, and LCM (ask for Two Trees). Also, you can ask to have the User (you) pick the number(s).
