Announcements:

Most Advisory teachers are offering Panther Cards in exchange for boxes of TISSUES.

Parents: If you think you might want to volunteer within the school at any point within the year, please get CORI checked as soon as possible.

Schedules are subject to change quite a bit during the first few weeks of school.  Students should not put the subject labels on their color-coded supplies yet; just label with names for now.

Be sure to check the 6 Curiosity calendar for important dates.

The homework link is intended to be used as a backup to your agenda and should never replace writing down your assignments.

Language Arts
TO BE UPDATED ONCE MRS. MURPHY HAS ACCESS.  :-)
We are off to a wonderful start to the school year!  Students are getting to know each other, their teachers and our beautiful Stony Brook School.  I am very excited to get to know each student as we begin our language arts study in sixth grade.

Language Arts curriculum this year  will provide many learning opportunities focusing on reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary.  We  will begin with a review of fiction and non fiction as we read and respond to selections from the Prentice Hall Anthology.  Students will begin our study of grammar with a  unit reviewing types of sentences, nouns and verbs.  Vocabulary is  primarily an independent study and workbooks will we distributed  near the end of the month.

Independent reading is also a requirement in class.  Please be sure your child brings an independent reading book to school each day.

Math ~
Welcome to 6th grade math!  We are very excited to be using a program called Big Ideas Math.  There are many great components to this program.  There is a traditional-style textbook complete with examples and practice problems AND there is on-line access to the exact same textbook as well as additional learning materials.  The webpage is a great resource, and the online information is written in html format allowing it to be opened via computer, tablet and phone.

Click on the book below to access the Student Text Book.

Social Studies ~
This year in Social Studies our major focus is on world geography and world culture.  We concentrate on how the geography of the world affects peoples everyday lives.  Our main theme of the year is the Five Themes of Geography. Everything the students learn this year will fit into one of the categories for the Five Themes of geography. The beginning of the year is spent learning how to make and read maps.  After students have become experts on maps they learn about what characteristics make up cultures around the world.  We use the last half of the year learning about the different regions of the world.  We do lots of activities and projects to help students learn about Asia, Africa, The Middle East, and Europe.
