So, it took a week, but at least today felt more like Fall than Summer.
The cookout was a lot of fun today and the number of students saying thank you as they headed back inside is just awesome. While they might not always remember their manners at home or even here consistently, they do know them and it is reassuring when they exercise them.
Many of our students have expressed wanting to find ways to help their peers in the other areas of the country recently devastated by Hurricanes. Our 6th and 7th graders have connected with a specific school in the Houston area and will be collecting items for some classrooms still feeling the impact of Hurricane Harvey. Our 8th graders are collecting items to support schools in Florida impacted by Hurricane Irma who are continuing to identify resources that their students will not have access to following the destruction of the storms there. As we learn more about the needs in Puerto Rico for those suffering from the devastation brought by Hurricane Maria, we will find ways to help students channel their energy and compassion to support their peers there, as well.
While individuals still struggle from time to time with making the wisest of decisions, collectively our students know how to make a difference and they are more often making a positive difference indeed.
Have a wonderful weekend!
